Russell attended university in Canterbury graduating LLB (Hons) in 1983 and was admitted to the bar as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand on the 1st February 1985.
Russell was initially employed doing property and litigation work for Joynt Andrews Cottrell and Dawson.
Russell moved to New Plymouth in 1987 working mainly as a litigator and became a partner of Till Henderson King in 1991. He continued with Till Henderson King until 2005 when he became a barrister sole.
Russell was appointed President of the Taranaki District Law Society from 1999 to 2001 and also served on the Taranaki Standards Committee of the New Zealand Law Society from its inception in 2008 until 2017. Russell is currently a member of the New Zealand Law Society and the New Zealand Bar Association.
Russell is married with three children and in his spare time he enjoys playing bridge, often travelling around New Zealand to compete in tournaments. Russell has a keen interest in cricket and was Chairman of Taranaki Cricket from 2016 to 2018. He also loves walking around Mount Taranaki and has been to the top several times. Russell is proud to have lived and worked in Taranaki for over 32 years.
